The compression fitting has a ferrule that comes with it which you toss out. Then into this hole you screw a brass 1/4” npt to compression fitting.
That is a tapered tap but I think you could do it without the taper since the thickness of pvc in that cap is quite thin and a taper doesn’t really form. The cap you drill and tap with a 1/4” NPT pipe tap. These parts fit almost perfectly into a 1” pvc pipe - I mean that they rest on the open end. Use a small pair of flush cutters to shatter resistor R4, be sure to remove all of it such that the two pads are isolated from each other.
